Elastic solution for liquid-bridging-induced microscale contact

چکیده
Microscale contact between two solid surfaces induced by the liquid-bridging force is studied in the present article. Attention is focused on the interaction between the size of the contact area and the magnitude of the liquid-bridging force. The liquid-bridging force is related to the contact size and the other parameters, such as the filling angle, the contact angles, and the surface tension of the liquid, by solving the Laplace–Young equation. A singular integral equation for the coupled contact equilibrium problem is established and solved. Two approximate solutions for the same problem are also given and compared with the solution of the singular integral equation. Parametric study reveals the dependence of the semicontact width and the liquid-bridging force on the filling angle and the dimensionless group in the microscale contact. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1415057#

Mechanics of adhesion in MEMS — a review
A review is presentedof the mechanics of microscale adhesion in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Some governingdimensionlessnumbers such as Tabor number, adhesionparameter and peel number for microscale elastic adhesion contact are discussed in detail. The peel number is modi ed for the elastic contact between a rough surface in contact with a smooth plane. Roughness ratio is introduced ...
متن کاملOn Analytic Solutions of Elastic Net Displacements around a Circular Tunnel
Displacements around a tunnel, occurring as a result of excavation, consist of the elastic and plastic parts. In this paper, we discuss the elastic part of displacements as a result of excavation, called net displacement. In general, the previous analytical solutions presented for determining the displacements around a circular tunnel in an elastic medium do not give the net displacements...
متن کاملMultiscale modeling of alloy solidification using a database approach
A two-scale model based on a database approach is presented to investigate alloy solidification. Appropriate assumptions are introduced to describe the behavior of macroscopic temperature, macroscopic concentration, liquid volume fraction and microstructure features. These assumptions lead to a macroscale model with two unknown functions: liquid volume fraction and microstructure features. Thes...
متن کاملMicroscale heat transfer in a free jet against a plane surface
A new two-layer model has been proposed to study microscale heat transfer associated with a developing flow boundary layer. As an example, a cold, microscale film of liquid impinging on an isothermal hot, horizontal surface has been investigated. The boundary layer is divided into two regions: a micro layer at microscale away from the surface and a macro layer at macroscale away from the surfac...
متن کاملIn-situ studies of cartilage microtribology: roles of speed and contact area.
The progression of local cartilage surface damage toward early stage osteoarthritis (OA) likely depends on the severity of the damage and its impact on the local lubrication and stress distribution in the surrounding tissue. It is difficult to study the local responses using traditional methods; in-situ microtribological methods are being pursued here as a means to elucidate the mechanical aspe...
